End the R-Word
I heard it again last night. The “R” word. And it was intentionally hurtful. I’m o.k. with the medical term “Mental Retardation” when it’s being used in the correct connotation. It’s when the pejorative forms, “retard” or “retarded” are being used to insult people with intellectual disabilities that makes me sad. In today’s society, the “R” word has come to mean stupid or dumb and is used casually to describe not only people, but anything someone doesn’t like.
Those words cut through a person’s soul and it not only hurts the person being insulted, but by those who care deeply for that individual. It will only stop when we want it to stop. When we ask others not to use that word. I ask that you become aware of it, when you are around friends, co-workers and even family, and kindly ask others to stop using it. You never know who is listening and if they have someone in their life that they love and care for with special needs.
Please watch this video of a sister’s love for her brother and the message she gives.
