Heritage Homes celebrating Older Americans Month

Marketing May 12, 2015

Since 1963, May is dedicated to appreciate and celebrate the vitality of older adults and their achievements.  Through LeadingAge and Administration for Community Living, this year’s theme for Older Americans Month is “Get into the Act”.

“Get into the Act” emphasizes the how older adults are taking charge of their health, getting involved in their communities and making a positive impact in the lives of others.  By promoting and engaging in activity, wellness, and inclusivity, more Americans than ever before can “Get into the Act.”

This May, Heritage Homes recognizes older Americans as productive and active members of society.  While Heritage Homes provides services and supports to older adults all year round, Older Americans Month is a great opportunity to show the importance of community engagement as a tool for enhancing the wellbeing of older adults.

Throughout the month, Heritage Homes will be conducting special activities designed to engage residents.

  • Flower planting in raised garden beds
  • Community outings including a trip to the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory (The Domes).
  • Tea party hosted by residents for their family members

Along with engaging residents, some activities are open to the public. Below are a couple of events specifically designed to bring Heritage Homes residents and the community together.

  • Rummage Sale on Friday, May 15 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Proceeds from the Rummage Sale will benefit the Independent Living Resident Association.
  • Memory Café on Wednesday, May 20 at 10 a.m. at Connection Café in Watertown. The Memory Café is a safe, comfortable, and engaging environment for those with memory loss and their caregivers. It is a place where guests can laugh, learn, and remain socially engaged with others traveling the same journey.

“Events and activities enrich the lives of our residents,” said Ashley Haines, Heritage Homes’ social events coordinator. “Whenever we can involve the community with our programs, there is a sense of pride among the residents and staff.”
