“God’s Price is Right” Camp returns to Hope Residence

Camp week is the residents’ favorite week of the year. The theme for the third annual event was “God’s Price is Right.” Pastor Patrick Feldhus, chaplain at Hope, based the theme off of the television show “The Price is Right.” The show is a resident favorite.
The camp featured a variety of “The Price is Right” games, outings, and devotions. Hope team member Jenny Lindstrom helped to create the games. In addition, special outings included a pontoon ride on a nearby lake.
“I enjoyed taking the residents on the pontoon,” explained Megan Lambrecht, therapeutic recreation director. “It was such a fun time on the lake and something different for our residents. They expressed their excitement and thankfulness to go on the boat ride.”
The camp concluded with a grill out and a campfire with s’mores and singing camp songs. Our residents shared their favorite parts of the week:
- “I liked playing the “The Price is Right” games and making s’mores,” said Gloria
- “My favorite part was the campfire and singing songs,” said Matthew.
- “I liked going on the boat ride and making s’mores,” said Jim.
“By using the game show as the backdrop for the camp, we took a favorite activity and added a spiritual element to it. The devotions showed residents how they are children of God,” Pastor Feldhus said. “That they are perfect on Earth and will be in heaven, too. This resonated with them, as, like all of us, they struggle with acceptance.”
The camp tradition has become a staple of the summer activity calendar for Hope residents. Hope Residence is a vibrant community filled with spirited residents and team members.
Pastor Feldhus shared a devotion based on first day of camp.
God’s Price is Right
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. (John 3:16-17)
What is the most memorable gift you received for Christmas or birthday? When I was younger, I received tickets to see Janet Jackson. This was my first concert, and I will never forget how excited I was to experience it with my family.
To this day, I do not know how much those concert tickets cost because they were a gift. That’s the best thing about gifts…you do not have to pay for them.
The verses from John Chapter 3 refer to a gift that God gave to the world. That gift was his Son, and through that gift, people have eternal life. Who did God give the gift to? The WORLD…the very world that is seemingly out of control, the world that has ignored and abandoned its relationship with the Lord, the world that is ruled by sin.
The world and everyone in it, including you and me, do not deserve any gift from God, yet our God sent us his greatest and most precious gift—his Son!
And God does not demand anything from us! His gift to the world is free! God’s Price Is Right! God was willing to pay the price for this gift all by himself so that we can receive eternal life through his Son.
God’s gift of his Son comes with so many exciting gifts. Through Jesus, we have eternal life, forgiveness, daily bread, access to the water of life, and the gift of giving all of this to others. All of these gifts cost us nothing.
Rejoice, for these gifts cost you nothing, as God’s Price Is Right!
Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, thank you for your generosity in giving your Son as a gift to the world. Help us to rejoice in the free gift of eternal life that your Son supplies to the world. Empower us with your love to share this gift with others. In Jesus’s name we pray. Amen.
