Take steps to prevent falls
As autumn continues and winter is soon approaching, we can all take small steps is prevent falls. Here are a few tips to ensure you stay healthy:
1. See your doctor on a regular basis. Know what medications you are taking, both prescription and over-the-counter products. Medications could interfere with each other, resulting in dizziness, which could contribute to a fall.
2. Keep moving. Staying active, doing seated exercises, and participating in exercise classes will promote strength and balance and reduce the chances of falling.
3. Wear proper footwear. Avoid high heels, slippers, and ill-fitted shoes. Clutter in your living space can also pose a hazard and could greatly increase the chances of falling.
4. Non-skid bathmats in the shower are recommended. Handrails, raised toilet seats, and grab bars play important roles in reducing falls.
