Let Our Thanksgiving Serve As an Example for Others.

Thank a Veteran who sacrificed to give you something that other countries only dream about.

“All gave some. Some gave all.” This well-known phrase resonates with me when I think about what it took for us to have the freedom we have in this country. It also frustrates me when I see what an entitled society we have become. And yes, I include myself in that.

A comedian was reflecting on the angry reaction of the passenger next to him on a flight when it was announced that the in-flight Wi-Fi was not working. This was the first flight to have Wi-Fi available. Because it was new, the airline still had bugs to work out, and the passenger next to him was very angry when it stopped working. The comedian said, “How quickly we become entitled about something we only knew existed 10 seconds ago.”

Thank God for giving you forgiveness and love.

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

We are far more likely to appreciate something if we understand the work and sacrifice that went into it. Jesus went through physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma through intense suffering, separation from His Father, and ultimately death. This monumental act of love resulted in our forgiveness. God hands us the ultimate prize: life with Him in heaven through zero effort of our own. That’s grace. It is by grace we have been saved. It is NOT from ourselves. It is a gift.

Thank a veteran who sacrificed to give you something that other countries only dream about. Thank God for giving you forgiveness and love. Remember the trials that others endured to give you what you have.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, I cannot repay the infinite cost of your sacrifice, and I have not earned your love for me. Forgive me for the times when I allow myself to feel entitled to the countless gifts you give me day after day. In humility, lead me to appreciate every day, every breath, and every opportunity. Let my thanksgiving serve as an example for others.  Amen.
