Mentorship program at Heritage Homes leads to new hire

Heritage Homes May 4, 2022

At our care communities, there’s a wide variety of career opportunities to care for our residents. Each site has such departments as nursing, social work, marketing, food service, housekeeping, maintenance, administration, and more. From the outside, people don’t always realize the opportunities we offer.

At Heritage Homes, Casey Schuett, Campus Administrator, and DesiRae Bliefernicht, Human Resources, came together to brainstorm ways to showcase their care community as an employer in the Watertown community.

DesiRae reached out to the local high school to explore potential partnerships for students, and she connected with the teacher of a health observations course.

“We were grateful to hear back right away,” said DesiRae. “As part of the class, students can shadow within local healthcare organizations. This type of engagement fits perfectly with what we were hoping to do.”

Each week, a student from the class spends an hour a day at Heritage Homes.

“Typically, the student spends Monday with me. I will give a tour and go over what my job is,” explained Casey. “The rest of the week varies but usually includes spending time in activities, human resources, nursing, and direct care. We also try to plan it depending on what the student’s interests are.”

In addition to highlighting Heritage Homes as an employer with a great work environment, team members hope to encourage young people to consider a future career in healthcare.

“We hope to show individuals considering the field what this industry is like,” Casey said, “helping them prepare and have an idea of what a future career might look like.”

The partnership has also led high school students to consider part-time opportunities within the Heritage Homes family once they turn 18.

No matter your age, now is a great time to become a part of the Heritage team! See openings and apply at tlha.org/careers.
