Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid.

Rev. Roger Woller June 6, 2022

“Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid.” (John 14:27)

There are many antonyms for the word peace. What is the opposite of the word peace?

Because of what is happening to the people of Ukraine right now, the first word that comes to our mind is war. War is opposite of peace. That is true. When there is war, there is no peace.

A google search result includes more antonyms such as disagreement, hate, hatred, discord, agitation, disharmony, distress, fighting, frustration, upset, and worry. Noise and irritation are also listed.

As Christians, we know why there is no real peace in this world among people. This is because of sin and what sin has done to us. If there were no sin, there would be real peace.

I want PEACE. You want PEACE. Most people want peace.

What do we say to Jesus when he says? “Peace, I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid.”

If you don’t know or are confused or wondering what kind of PEACE Jesus is talking about, I urge you to:

  • Read the Gospel of John.
  • Go to a Bible Class and ask questions.
  • Give the Holy Spirit a chance to work in your heart.

The world around us cannot give you the PEACE that only Jesus can give you. There will never be worldly peace on this side of eternity. We pray for it. We strive for peace, but it will never be, as long as there is sin.

Let the peace of Jesus fill your heart.  Let the peace of God’s forgiveness rule your heart. You will then know what Jesus meant when he said, “Do not let your heart be troubled, and do not let it be afraid.” Every day, Jesus says to you, “PEACE BE WITH YOU!” Amen.

Prayer: Lord, give us the peace that you have earned for us by your suffering and dying on the cross. We know that there will never be peace in this world, but we pray that you move the hearts of people in this world to stop fighting. With you alone, there is peace. Amen.
