Another post-flood promise

Rev. Joel Gaertner October 10, 2022

“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” (Genesis 8:22)

There are many things in our world which are truly amazing. One of them is the way the seasons roll from one to another year after year. The regular change of the seasons is one of the promises God made to Noah and his family after the flood.

We often remember God’s biggest and most visible promise, putting a rainbow in the sky and promising “never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.”  While that is probably the most well-known of God’s post-flood promises, it is not the only one.

God also ties seedtime and harvest with the promise of the ongoing change of the seasons as long as the world exists.  If you live or have been in the Midwest at this time of the year, you will likely see combines and other harvesting machines feverishly working before it gets too cold. The planting, growing and harvest cycle is another blessing of God which we easily take for granted.

All of this is a reminder of a far greater blessing from God which is not tied to the flood.  Each time, we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we pray “give us this day our daily bread.” God promises he will give us everything we need for each day.

Let these long-kept promises continue to assure you of God’s never-ending love and care for you!

Prayer: Gracious God, how amazing and beautiful are the promises you have not only made but continue to keep for your people.  Forgive us for the times we so often take them for granted or fail to appreciate them. Lead us to pause and appreciate your ongoing, amazing care for us and the world around us.  When we are doubting or troubled, lead us to reflect on your care and be assured you will continue to be with us all our days.  Receive our humble thanks, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
