Learn love from God

Rev. Joel Gaertner February 14, 2023

Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. (1 John 4:8)

Over the past few days, you have likely been barraged with commercials and other messages suggesting the best ways to show love to that special person today.  Flowers, candy, expensive jewelry, a fancy candlelight dinner and many other suggestions have been paraded before us.  Not that any of those things are wrong, but how long do many of them last?

In today’s Bible verse, John gives us a lesson in love in three short words, “God is love.” In contrast to the many short-lived expressions of love shared today, John’s words remind us that the love which God embodies is eternal. God’s love has always been here and will be around into eternity.

There will also likely be cards or other expressions of love shared today which promise something like “I’ll love you forever.” That is something which no human being can honestly fulfill.

What can we learn from God about love?  Love is actions, not just words.  There is no end to the actions God has completed to show his love.  They began with the perfect creation of the world and the wonderful surroundings he has given us to live in.  When you page not just through the Bible, but all of history, you see incredible examples of God giving his blessings and extending his protection.

So often those are the places we go first to speak about the love of God in action.  We must begin with and never forget God’s greatest act of love. Sending Jesus as our Savior, having him willingly die on the cross to pay for every sin and then guarantying us a place with him in heaven forever.

What does that teach us? We can seek to learn love from God and put that into practice. It stresses the utmost importance of making sure everyone whom we love knows God and his love. With that important knowledge, we can seek to let that boundless love of God show in everything we think, say and do.

Happy Valentines Day as you know and then show love like God!

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the love you have shown us. Most of all for sending Jesus as our Savior. As we can review all the ways you have put your love into action, forgive us for our lovelessness and empower us to let your love shine through us in every aspect of our lives.  We pray this in the name of your gift of love, Jesus our Savior. Amen.
