Thank you, mom! (for teaching me about Jesus)

Rev. Joel Gaertner May 15, 2023

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it.” (2 Timothy 3:14)

In addition to the flowers, dinners, and other signs of appreciation given to mothers across our country today, there will be cards with heartfelt expressions of gratitude for all that mom has done for the individual.

What is the most important thing your mom taught you or did for you:

  • Unconditional love?
  • Being your always-on-call Uber driver?
  • Teaching you how to drive?

You know that the list is long, and we could go on and on.

As we seek to recognize our moms, the lessons we consider first are likely to relate only to our life in this world. These lessons are often needed, but they are not the most important thing a mother could help her children with or give to them.

Today’s verse is an encouragement that the Apostle Paul gave to Timothy, a young pastor who worked under him.

Two chapters earlier Paul talks about how young Timothy was taught the faith which he had, and Paul was encouraging him to continue in – “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” (2 Timothy 1:5)

How many of us can’t say the same thing?  Think of how we learned to sing “Jesus Loves Me” in the arms of or on the lap of our mother or grandmother.

Do you remember where you first learned about Noah’s Ark, David and Goliath, Daniel in the lion’s den, baby Jesus in the manger, and so many other familiar Bible stories?  Weren’t they from your mother’s lips as she read you your nighttime Bible story or reviewed your Sunday School lesson with you?

We certainly want to show our deep appreciation to Mom today for all the things she has given us and taught us.  As you seek to do that, make sure she knows how grateful you are for the eternal blessing she has helped nourish in you, your faith in Jesus as your Savior.

I once read that someone said the best gift you could give Mom on Mother’s Day is going to church with her.  I think I can safely say that any Christian mom would not just want their child with them in church on Mother’s Day, but more importantly with them in heaven for eternity.

As you give cards, flowers, and other tokens of appreciation to Mom today, remember the eternal gift which she has given you and ask God to help you keep it all your life so you and Mom can be together forever in heaven.

Prayer: Gracious God, today we give thanks for our moms and all the blessings you have given us through them.  While they have raised us, given us, and taught us so much, please help us never forget the most important lessons they have taught us. The ones about Jesus which we learned in their arms or on their lap.  Continue to bless us and our mothers through this life and bring us one day to live with you forever in heaven. Amen.
