What a Family!

Rev. Ed Fredrich June 5, 2023

Now if we are children, we are also heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, since we suffer with him, so that we may also be glorified with him. (Romans 8:17)

A few years ago, I read an article that posed a question to various well-known Bible scholars. The question read:

“If you were in prison and were only allowed to take one chapter of the Bible, which one would you take?”

Some of the answers were Isaiah 53, John 3, John 14, and Romans 3. The chapter that received the most votes was Romans 8. It was selected because the chapter contains everything a child of God needs to remember. It perfectly summarizes what the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have done for us.

Today, we are only looking at one verse of this chapter but take the time to look at the whole chapter. Our verse beautifully summarizes the entire chapter.

We are reminded that we are children of God. Not only because God created us, but because he sent Jesus to be our brother. Jesus dealt with our sins by taking them to the cross. By faith in Jesus, we are not only God’s children, but we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.

Jesus has won the victory. He led the perfect life the law required. He satisfied the payment needed. Through his death, he established an inheritance for us. Because Jesus lives that victory is assured. The inheritance in ours by faith. Look at the family to which we belong!

We can rejoice by asking, isn’t it great to be a child? It sure is. As God’s word declares: “since we suffer with him, so that we may also be glorified with him.”

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for being our brother and making us members of your family. Keep us in your care. Amen.
