Committed to love!
But God shows his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
Why am I sick? Why do I seem to struggle to pay my bills every month? Why do I never receive visitors? I am all alone. Have you ever had questions like these come across your mind? What is the question behind all these other questions? Does God still love me?
The devil is a master at getting us to question God’s ongoing love for us. He points out all our earthly struggles and gets us to wonder if God loves us. If he does love us, why does he allow us to go through these painful ordeals?
There are two conclusions that the devil wants us to come up with:
- God has turned his love away because of something we have done.
- God has turned his love away because he is uncaring.
These two conclusions lead to despair or hatred. There is another conclusion that sets our hearts at ease! Paul explains God’s love in a way that gives us continual comfort. “God shows his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

First, God goes beyond just saying he loves us. He put his love on display. Notice that he showed his love not to people who loved him first, but to sinners, his enemies! Then the shock of all shocks, he crucified his perfect Son for his enemies. When those questions come, look at the cross and find your answers. God is committed to loving you and that love remains because it is based on his Son’s death. The devil cannot change God’s love. The world cannot change God’s love. Your sin cannot change God’s love.
You do not have to earn his love. God’s love remains forever, and nothing can separate you from God’s love in Christ Jesus. This is the only way to remain confident and comforted in our earthly troubles and trials. In the end, God will bring you to himself and you will continue to experience his love forever in the glory of heaven!
Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven. Thank you for demonstrating your commitment to loving us by giving up your only Son to die for us sinners. Help up turn to the cross as a constant reminder of your love that never changes. In Jesus’ name, we pray! Amen!
