Listen to the Author of Life!

Rev. Ed Fredrich June 30, 2024

Grasping the hand of the child, he said to her, “Talitha, koum!” (When translated, that means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”) Mark 5:41

Have you ever tried to imagine what a day with Jesus would be like? It seems wherever Jesus went there was always a crowd. On this day described by Mark, the synagogue ruler, named Jairus, comes with a request. He daughter is sick. Could Jesus come and heal her. Jesus obviously said he would, he goes with Jairus.

There is a problem. There is a large crowd and many of them pressing to be able to touch Jesus. Then Jesus says, “Who touched my robe?” The disciples were surprised. Why would Jesus ask that? But Jesus takes the time to strengthen the faith of a woman who for the past twelve years was plagued with an incurable sickness. Remember Jairus wants Jesus’ help for his daughter, and friends come to inform him that it is too late. The daughter had died. Jesus said, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe.”

Coming into the house of mourning, Jesus said, “The child is not dead but sleeping.” That brought on the laughter of the crowd. Then we follow Jesus to the place the 12 year old was and says, “Talitha, koum!”

What did Jesus say? This story truly illustrates that we should always listen to the Jesus. The One who could command the little girl to rise out of the sleep of death, is the Author of Life. His life, death and resurrection declares that he is the Author of life. Always turn to his Word and hear what Jesus has to say.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, the Author of Life, thank you for the victory over sin, death and the devil. Help us always to focus on you and your Word in this world of crowds, trouble and confusion.  Enable us to live in thanks to you and cherish your precious gift of life. Amen.
