Enjoy the Banquet!
“I am the Bread of Life,” Jesus told them. “The one who comes to me will never be hungry, and the one who believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35
Jesus had recently rebuffed the crowd’s attempt to make him a “bread king.” They had thought that it would be so awesome to just be able to sit on the mountain side and have Jesus supply the food. No work or responsibility involved. Our verse is from a conversation with the crowd that would cause a lot of his “followers” to no longer believe in Jesus.
Jesus’ claim seemed impossible to them, because they really weren’t listening to Jesus. Their mind was set on earthly welfare.
How do you react to the claim: “Jesus is all you need.” Did you respond, “Yah, sure!” in skepticism? Or, “Yes! That is the truth.” There are those who look at today’s world and blame all that is going on as God’s fault. So they have appointed themselves as the one who is going to make all things right. If you agree with that group, I want you to look at what Jesus is saying here.
There may be times in our life when we will be hungry and thirsty and have nothing physical to satisfy the needs. This is a non-perfect world. No attempts of human kind will be able to make it perfect. But if you listen to what Jesus is saying you can always be “satisfied” because you know that Jesus will see you through.
What a perfect banquet the Bread of Life has supplied! With our eternal future secured, we can trust that our present is also on the table. He knows our needs and he will see us through. He’s promised. The Bread of Life never goes back on his Word. He truly satisfies.
O living Bread of Life, continue to be my source of joy and satisfaction. Amen.
