Reformation Confidence!

Rev. Ed Fredrich October 31, 2024

The Lord of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is a fortress for us.  Psalm 46:7

Today is the 507th anniversary of the posting of “The 95 Thesis” by Martin Luther. Even though the humble monk just intended those 95 statements to be a basis for debate it spurred a movement that tremendously influenced Europe both religiously and politically in its day. That was then. Does the Reformation make any difference today?

Just as every event brings about results, so the Reformation changed the world then and the results are bringing about other results today. That is how God created this world. There are always events that change the course of history.

Psalm 46 is the basis for the hymn “A Mighty Fortress” which is also known as the Battle Hymn of the Reformation. Throughout the ages since the Holy Spirit inspired this psalm, it has always been a confession of faith in the awesome rule of the LORD, our King. The psalm aided the faithful so that they could continue the ongoing battle against the devil and his allies.

This verse and verse 11 are the refrain of this confession of faith. Yes, “God is our refuge and strength, a helper who can always be found in times of trouble.” (verse 1) Has the devil stopped his attack on God’s kingdom? Has his allies in the world declared defeat? Absolutely not. Arguments can be made that the devil and his allies are stronger than ever.

Join in the relevant Reformation refrain. Yes, we boldly confess: The Lord of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is a fortress for us.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your wonderful rule. Thank you for raising up bold confessors of your truth. Enable us to find the comfort and strength we need to continue the Reformation. Amen.
