Join in the Christmas Carol!
Then Mary said, My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, 47 and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. Luke 1:46-47
The fullness of time had come. The angel was dispatched to speak to Zechariah and then to Mary. In the special announcement Mary was told about Elizabeth’ pregnancy as another example of how nothing is impossible with God. So the young virgin, as the prophet had declared, would bear a son. In a way, the angel was also suggesting to Mary that she go visit Elizabeth.
Another surprise awaited Mary when she arrived at Elizabeth’s home. Luke 1:41-45 records: Just as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42 She called out with a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43 But why am I so favored that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44 In fact, just now, as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy! 45 Blessed is she who believed, because the promises spoken to her from the Lord will be fulfilled!”
That is where the opening words of the first Christmas carol occur. The Lord’s wonderful actions have always worked praise and song in the hearts of believers for all time. There is a whole book of the Bible that is devoted to songs, the Psalms.
Why sing? Look what was taking place. Mary’s Savior was going to be born. Her salvation was being accomplished. But not only hers, but the salvation of everyone throughout the ages. When we consider the event she was celebrating, Mary had reason to break out in song. Let’s join in.
Lord Jesus, with Mary, my soul glorifies you Lord for the amazing victory that you have provided for me and everyone. Enable my song of praise to lead others to praise you. Amen.
