Jesus loves to eat with you!
He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Luke 22:15
Today we remember an amazing event. Knowing what was going to happen, Jesus was anticipating celebrating the Passover with his disciples. God had the Passover meal as a remembrance of the great deliverance from slavery in Egypt. Jesus also knew that this evening the true deliverance that the Passover pictured was being fulfilled. God’s Lamb was going to be offered as the perfect sacrifice for all.
At the time, Jesus’ disciples were busy quarreling about which of them was the most important. They were unaware that God’s Lamb, the greatest expression of love that was ever given, was not only going to be sacrificed, but that he would give them a new ceremonial meal. As they were eating, Jesus took the bread and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 In the same way, he took the cup after the supper, saying, “This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is being poured out for you.” (Luke 22:19-20)
Every time we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we celebrate the amazing love Jesus has for us. He knows us. He knows our needs. Our loving Savior gives us a way in which we can directly take part in the sacrifice of his body and blood. He gives it to us “in, with and under” the bread and wine. That is what makes the Lord’s Supper so amazing. By it, Jesus imparts to us the very means that took our sins away. Even now, after Jesus has suffered and died, he still eagerly loves to eat with us.
Lord Jesus, thanks for the precious feast of your body and blood. Fill our hearts with appreciation and joy as we eat with you. Amen.
