We are Commissioned!
Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you! Just as the Father has sent me, I am also sending you.” John 20:21
The disciples were going through the greatest tragedy that had ever happened in their lives to this point. The “man” they had followed for the last three years had been arrested, crucified and placed in a tomb—DEAD! They had been so confident that Jesus was the Messiah, the son of David who would rule on David’s throne forever. But now he was dead.
By the time Jesus speaks these words in our text, they had heard the report of the women that had gone to the tomb and found it empty. They had reported how the angels had told them that Jesus was alive. Peter and John found that the tomb was empty. Mary Magdalene reported her encounter with Jesus. Luke also added the story of two disciples that had spent the afternoon with Jesus as they were returning to Emmaus.
Jesus himself appears to them. First, he let them touch him to feel and see that he was truly alive. But Jesus didn’t just comfort his disciples. He also had a great purpose for them. Jesus had been sent on a mission. Now Jesus had a mission for them. They were sent out with that great news of Jesus’ successful mission.
Almost 2000 years later, the commission still stands. The Holy Spirit had John record this command because it applies to the disciples of every year and time. The good news of the victory of Jesus still needs to be told. Everyone who believes in Jesus receives the gift of eternal life. With it also comes this commission: “Peace be with you! Just as the Father has sent me, I am also sending you.”
Lord Jesus, thanks for the amazing peace of new life in you. Enable us to be faithful witnesses of your peace. Amen.
