Listening to the Voice!
My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. John 10:27-28
This Sunday is special for two reasons. In the Church Year it is Good Shepherd Sunday. In the civil calendar it is Mother’s Day.
If you were blessed with a great Christian mother, what is one aspect of her that is dear to you? My mom has been in heaven for 30 years, but I can still hear her voice. I also especially recall when I think of her of how she did chores. When she thought she was alone she sang hymns. When she wanted to be more quiet she whistled the melodies with her unique style of whistle. The joy of her heart was often expressed in the words she spoke.
How distinctive the voice is. Most of you who are reading this have never heard Ma’s voice. But there is a voice that we all have heard and continue to hear. We celebrate that voice as we hear our Good Shepherd call us. Still basking in the Easter glow, we are comforted with the wonderful message we hear our Good Shepherd speak.
Maybe you don’t have good memories of your mother’s voice, or you may even resent it as she scolds you. But don’t miss the comfort that you have because you have heard and continue to hear the Good Shepherd’s voice. If you realize that you haven’t heard that voice for a while, I don’t think it is the Good Shepherd’s fault.
Do you hear the voice? It assures, “No one can snatch us out of our Good Shepherd’s hands.”
Good Shepherd, thank you for speaking to my heart. Also, continue to bless all mothers so that they too reflect your voice in what they say. Amen.
