Good News of Great Joy!
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. For behold, I bring you good news of great joy, which will be for all people. Luke 2:10
December 24! There may be a few countries where Christmas isn’t recognized. Even communist countries “celebrate” Christmas. I don’t to be guilty of misjudging them, but their motivation for “celebrating” Christmas might be from a different slant than Christians. Even in what may be called a “Christian” country, many have a view of Christmas that may miss the reason the Christian church began celebrating Christmas.
Our question today I feel is fitting, is the message that the angel delivered still true?
The influences of the world around us have also influenced how we feel and deal with Christmas. All the decorating, gift buying and wrapping, and gatherings can add a lot of pressure. Then there are others who are not part of that frenzy and feel deprived. The season makes them feel joyless. For others the season brings back past memories. Some fondly remember the loved one(s) or past years and wish that were still true.
The angel’s message of Good News of Great Joy, however, doesn’t depend onour emotions. Actually, when we honestly apply that message to our hearts, the truth of message brings about the promise. Yes, the angel delivered good news. The Savior was born. The One who would take away sin. Since we live in a time after that was accomplished, we can rejoice in that good news.
Whether today fills your heart with sadness or anticipation, look to that Savior who has given you that great joy of sins forgiven. That assurance that he will never leave you or forsake you. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being that good news of great joy. Continue to cheer my heart with your love. Amen.
