Never thirst again!
John 4:14- “But whoever drinks the water I will give him will never be thirsty ever again. Rather, the water I will give him will become in him a spring of water, bubbling up to eternal life.” (EHV)
After a strenuous exercise routine, your body needs to replenish its water. Water is the building block of our bodies. We can last weeks without food, but only days without water. Water also helps flush our bodies of impurities. Many wars are fought over water. You can say it is one of the most if not the most valuable resources on earth. This makes sense since about 60% of our bodies are water. But no matter how much water we drink, we will always need more. It is just a matter of time before the thirst returns.
Perhaps this is why the Samaritan woman was confused when Jesus offered her water that will quench her thirst forever. But what was this water? She was thinking of the physical water that she was getting out of the well. The water Jesus was offering was the water of forgiveness and eternal life that he would earn by giving up his life on the cross. Before she could desire this water, she needed to know how thirsty she was. With one phrase, Jesus points out the cause of her deep-rooted thirst. “Go, call your husband, and come back here.” She was caught in adultery. Sin is the deep-rooted cause of thirst that cannot be quenched by human effort. It is a thirst that leads to death.
This is the deep-rooted thirst that you and I are dealing with too. Think about all the sins we commit in a day. It does not have to be adultery. It could be dishonoring the name of the Lord. It could be dishonoring our parents and others in authority. Look at God’s Ten Commandments, and you will see just how thirsty you are. Jesus showed the woman her deep-rooted thirst for a reason. He is the water to quench the thirst of sin that gives eternal life.
When your guilt put a stranglehold on you, drink from Jesus, the free gift of the water of life, and it will become a bubbling spring of water welling up to eternal life. He is the only one who has this water, and he is the only one who can give this water. And it will cost you nothing because, he paid for it with his life on the cross. Jesus makes it clear that you will never be thirsty again with his water!
Dear Savior, thank you for offering us the free gift of the water of life that will quench out deep-rooted thirst of sin. Help us drink of you daily until that day we join you in the glories of heaven. In your name we pray! Amen.
