Every detail must be fulfilled!

Rev. Patrick Feldhus April 3, 2026

John 19:28- After this, knowing that everything had now been finished, and to fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I thirst.” (EHV)

The phrase “the proof is in the details” means that the quality or truth of something is revealed by its small, often overlooked aspects. When we think of Good Friday, we tend to think of the grand moments. Jesus is rejected and deserted by his disciples. He is beaten and put on trial. He is flogged, mocked, and crucified. He forgives his executioners. He offers eternal life to one of the criminals. He makes preparations for his mother to be taken care of after he is gone. He suffers the abandonment of his Father. All of these things are greatly important to prove that he is the promised Savior.

But how often do we focus on the word, “I thirst”? Why is this even mentioned in Scripture? Every detail of Jesus’ passion must be fulfilled even the smallest one. This leaves no doubts that Jesus is the only one who fits the bill of Savior. He is the only one who fulfilled every small detail of the Old Testament. This gives us confidence that there is nothing left to be done for our salvation. When Jesus said, “It is finished!” he really meant it down to the smallest detail. His human thirst also proved that his suffering was absolutely real. He was not pretending to suffer. He suffered spiritually, emotionally, and physically. These details proves that our sin has been sufficiently paid for by the suffering Jesus endured on the cross.

Today is a day to celebrate that Jesus fulfills all the details required to be the Savior even the smallest detail of his thirst. Jesus made sure not to miss any details, so that he can rescue us from the depth of suffering we deserve for every sin. His suffering was all for you. This is yet another reason to call today Good Friday!

Dear Jesus, thank you for your dedication to walk into suffering for us. Your dedication to our salvation is a testimony of your love for each of us. Let us marvel at this love every day as you painfully fulfilled every detail of your passion for us! In your name we pray, Amen.
