A Truly Cherished Heart to Heart!
They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking to us along the road and while he was explaining the Scriptures to us?” Luke 24:32
Who would have thought the day would turn out like it did. After the “terrible” events of the weekend, there seemed no reason to remain in Jerusalem. The one that they had hoped was the Messiah had been crucified. Even though there was a report from some women that Jesus wasn’t in the tomb and there was a rumor that Jesus had risen, they decided it would be better to continue to mourn at home, rather than in Jerusalem. So the guys we have come to know as the “Emmaus Disciples” were about to have a heart to heart they would never forget.
On their return they came across a “clueless” guy who seemed not to know anything about the events that had taken place in Jerusalem. But to their surprise they were in for a conversation that literally would change their lives. Luke tells us that this “guy” surprised them. “Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.”
After the heart to heart was over our verse today gives us their assessment: “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was speaking to us along the road and while he was explaining the Scriptures to us?”
It really gives us a true picture of why God has given us his Word. The Holy Spirit uses that Word to deliver God’s heart to heart with us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for your heart to heart. What a joy to have that assurance of eternal life. Amen.
