Jesus’ Prayer Answered!
Now, Father, glorify me at your own side with the glory I had at your side before the world existed. John 17:5
This verse is part of Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer that he prayed with his disciples in the Upper Room. He had just celebrated the Passover with them and institutes the Lord’s Supper. In this section, Jesus is praying for himself. It reveals some very important truths about himself.
Notice Jesus is asking to be restored to the position he had before he became true man. From eternity, there was never a time that Jesus didn’t exist. He is eternal, just as God the Father is eternal. Even though Jesus has become true man, he did not cease to be God. But from eternity, Jesus had volunteered to save the creation that the Triune God had made.
When Jesus asked his Father to glorify him as he was before. This indicated how Jesus would earn this “glorification.” Hebrews 2:10 states: “Certainly it was fitting for God (the one for whom and through whom everything exists), in leading many sons to glory, to bring the author of their salvation to his goal through sufferings.” So that Jesus, as true man, could be glorified, he had to carry out the mission the Father had put him on. We just celebrated the anniversary of the fulfillment of this prayer. Jesus ascended to the position he had before he became true man. Now as true God and true man, He rules all things to glorify the Father.
Rejoice that Jesus’ prayer is answered. That also means our salvation is secured.
Lord Jesus, once again I stand in awe at your grace and love. Thanks for the victory that you have won. Keep me in your care. Amen.
