Only Two or Three!

Rev. Ed Fredrich September 6, 2026

In fact where two or three have gathered together in my name, there I am among them.” Matthew 18:20

Do you find attending an event where many have gathered exciting? The number of people involved might even be one of the reasons you are there. A sporting event, a concert, or a presentation generally are more appealing when you know that there will be many others there.

When it comes to religious events, it is also great to see it well attended and many gathered for a common cause. But as important as numbers are, there is also a time when just two or three are there. In Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus is speaking about a very important one on one, restoring a sinner. Jesus tells us to go talk to the person, one on one. But look at what Jesus promises here: “In fact where two or three have gathered together in my name, I am among them.” You see, you aren’t going alone.

Think of what Jesus is promising as you talk with your spouse, family member or friend. In the context of these verses, Jesus is showing how much he loves each one of us personally. Jesus dies for each one of us personally. It is in that love that we reach out to others. Remember that when the person “sins against you.” There are many ways the sins can come, in words or actions. But what a wonderful exercise of the gospel that becomes when the love of Jesus is shared. Yes, with Jesus the two together is automatically three.

Lord Jesus, thank you for being present whenever your people gather in your name. Give us courage, love and gentleness as we speak your truth and share your forgiveness with one another. Amen.
