Day 3 of Lent: Faith – In what or whom do you trust?
Faith – In what or whom do you trust?
That is a question which we all wrestle with, even if you never verbalize it to anyone. Faith is a very personal matter, but also a very difficult matter. As sinful human beings we struggle with whom we have faith in and how much we trust in someone or something. Faith is so often limited by our own short-sightedness or doubt.
Jesus himself clearly explains this all: “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matthew 17:20).
Did you notice what Jesus said? You don’t need to have a huge faith to accomplish monumental things. Look up how small a mustard seed is. Jesus helps us understand that faith that is that small can move a mountain. That is because true faith is not dependent on our puny minds or sinful ideas, but on the almighty power of God which has done things far greater than we can ever imagine. The greatest and best thing faith in God gives us is the forgiveness of all of those sins of doubt and other shortcomings and the assurance that one day we will have a perfect home and perfect life in heaven.
Yes, we may give up on faith in our fellow human beings because they betray us or let us down. But, don’t ever lose faith in God who has been faithful to us even though we have been unfaithful to him more than we care to admit.
