Fix your eyes on Jesus!

Hebrews 3:1b “Fix your eyes on Jesus.”

Think for a moment of what you find your eyes being fixed on.

People? Things?  Money?  Food?  Alcohol?  Your phone?

That little exercise probably made you realize that there are many things which can grab the gaze of your eyes.  None of those things listed are wrong in and of itself.  But when you become consumed with one of those things, when you look on them in a sinful way, there is a problem.

Was there something else you wanted to add to that list?  Did you instantly think to yourself that Jesus was missing from that list?

Sadly, you probably realize how many things in this life can have our eyes focused on them and how easily none of them could end up being Jesus.

That is why the reminder in our verse for this week is so important in two ways.

First of all, we need to fix our eyes on Jesus and his cross. We need to ask for forgiveness for all the times we have made parts of his creation more important than him.  We need to ask for forgiveness for times we have looked at or used sinfully things he has given to us for our good.  We need to look to Jesus and his cross for forgiveness for the sins of our eyes, our minds, our hands, tongues and all the other ways we have failed to live perfectly as God demands of us.

Once we have repented of our sins and looked to Jesus for forgiveness, we also to need to look to him for strength and guidance.  Psalm 119:105 reminds us “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.” There is nothing wrong with seeking guidance and support from the people God has placed around us in this life, but we need to make sure that whatever guidance and direction we get is helping us walk the path God would have us walk.  How easily we can be directed down a wrong path or pointed in a wrong direction.  Make sure that above all you are seeking the strength and guidance which God gives in his Word.  That is the purpose of these weekly devotions, chapel services, other devotional opportunities you may have as well daily Bible reading and worship together with fellow Christians in church.

May God guide you as you fix your eyes on Jesus and seek his blessing to fix your eyes on everything he has given us in a way which is pleasing to him!
