No matter the sins committed, heaven is ours — guaranteed

“We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him” (1 Thessalonians 4:14).

If you want to get some interesting responses, bring up the subject of heaven and how people get to heaven — even who goes to heaven. Last week, I saw an article stating seriously “all dogs go to heaven.”

There are many different ideas regarding heaven, some of which sadly lead people astray. I pray blog_heaven_guaranteed.jpgthose people are lead to believe the truth. Our Bible verse for this week clearly states who goes to heaven and how: “We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”

Paul first tells us what our hope of heaven is based on — “We believe that Jesus died and rose again”. Any hope of heaven is based on the exact same thing our forgiveness is based on and that is Jesus, Jesus, only Jesus.

Paul then clearly states who and what determines who gets into heaven — “we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.” God determines who gets into heaven. Entrance into heaven is not something everyone is granted because of the good things they have done. Heaven is a gift through faith in Jesus as Savior.

This whole subject of heaven can cause much confusion and even consternation in our world. But this verse was not meant to cause any trouble, much the opposite. This verse was written to give hope and assurance to people who have doubts.

I can’t tell you how many Christians I have been with on their deathbeds who have had serious doubts about whether they will go to heaven because in their dying hours the devil has plagued them with their sins. The great assurance of this verse is that no matter what sins we have committed on earth, if we confess them and believe in Jesus, heaven in ours, guaranteed.

That is the wonderful assurance of this verse. Believe it and hold on to it, firmly knowing heaven is yours through faith in Jesus!
