Why consider a job in health care?

My first job while in high school was at a nursing home in my hometown. I worked as a dietary aide and later as an assistant cook. What started out as “just a job” turned out to be so much more. I had no idea that a job could be so meaningful. At the young age of 16, I formed genuine friendships with residents in that home. Not only did I try to bring smile to their faces but also they brought a smile to mine.

After attending college, I worked in retail management for a few years before returning to health care. I was looking for a job in human resources and found one at a health care organization. Jobs in the human resource field exist across many industries, but health care offers something that other industries may not.

Job Security
The COVID-19 pandemic highlights more than ever the volatility of the job market. Health care is resilient in such times. Business does not shut down. In fact, demand is higher because care must continue 24/7 to support those in need. Hiring during the pandemic continues, whereas individuals who are working in other industries may experience layoffs.

Impact
Sure, opportunities are all around us. You can work at the local gas station or at a fulfillment center, such as Amazon. However, health care jobs give you an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others. You become like family to those whom you serve. In fact, sometimes you are the only family they have.

Advancement Opportunity
The variety of opportunities in the health care industry are wide ranging, including careers in nursing, social work, marketing, food service, housekeeping, maintenance, administration, and more. Places such as The Lutheran Home Association offer career development through training and education. Examples of this include onsite nursing assistant classes, scholarship opportunities, and loan forgiveness programs.
