Celebrating 250 Years!
Then he (Jesus) said to them, “Therefore give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” Matthew 22:21
This year the 4th of July marked a special milestone. The “American experiment” has existed for 250 years! Is it right to give thanks?
Our verse today is part of a Gospel reading that is often used when remembering our government. Religious leaders approached Jesus with a question. They hoped Jesus’ answer would make him unpopular with the people, or give them reason to bring a charge against him. Remember the Roman government was occupying the country. Roman taxation was just a part of the oppression. Jesus’ profound answer is still valid today.
In Romans 13, the Apostle Paul reflects Jesus’ answer by declaring that “no governing authority exists except by God.” Our country seems to be quite divided. Maybe part of the problem lies with the “right of free speech” that the First Amendment gives us. We have the right to complain about what we feel is wrong in our country. As we exercise our rights we are reminded by Jesus that these rights are a gift from God. Through the 250 years, the Lord has provided many different presidents and leaders. Every four years we have a group of citizens rejoicing and a group who are filled with fear for the future.
Look at what Jesus is saying, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s.” As our elected head, we owe him our allegiance and obedience. The only exception would be if the leader commands us to disobey God. As we render God what is his, we come to him in prayer as he commanded.
Prayer
Lord, continue to bless the United States of America! Amen.
