Choose the best!
But one thing is needed. In fact, Mary has chosen that better part, which will not be taken away from her. (Luke 10:42)

It started out simple enough and as the right thing to do; Martha welcomed Jesus into her home. We aren’t told exactly, but we can assume that one or more (if not all) of the disciples would have been included in the invite. But even if it was only Jesus, it still would be something that had to be done just right.
Everything had to be perfect. He was the most popular person of that day. He went about preaching and teaching, and He showed his authority by healing various sicknesses and conditions. When the time came, the stress of all the preparations that had to be made just got the best of Martha. What was even worse, her sister was sitting there and listening to Jesus! She couldn’t help it, she had to go to Jesus. “Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me.”
I think it is helpful to remember that for most the books of the Bible and nearly all the Psalms, the middle verse or section is often the most important. The same is true for the book of Luke. Verse 42 is the middle. The response Jesus gives Martha is significant.
Just change the name to your name; it isn’t just Martha that needs the reminder. Jesus reminds us, “You are worried and upset about many things, but one thing is needed. In fact, Mary has chosen that better part, which will not be taken away from her.” Martha chose to worry about setting the table. Mary chose to listen to Jesus.
What’s your choice? The events in the world, our country, and in our own personal lives can be very distracting. They can even lead to frustration and worry. But remember the example of Mary. She chose the best. Jesus won’t disappoint you.
Prayer: Lord, how complicated life gets at times. Everything can be so overwhelming. Thank You for having Luke write about this example and use it as the Holy Spirit intends in our lives. We know we can always trust You. Amen.
