Chosen and Appointed!

Rev. Ed Fredrich May 5, 2024

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will endure, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. John 15:16

“I can’t do ANYTHING right!” Do you remember saying that or feeling that as a child? Maybe you have expressed that feeling and emotion recently. Actually it is a favorite temptation of the devil. Remember, we are sinners. As a result, we don’t always do what is right. The sad truth is that even our good deeds are tainted with sin. That makes our frustrated gasp accurate! It makes us feel useless and without purpose.

But before you throw in the towel, look again at the loving assurance that Jesus spoke. This verse was spoken on the night that Jesus was betrayed. In a few hours, he would be crucified. Knowing what was going to happen, Jesus never tells his disciples to pity him because of what he was facing. Instead his attention was focused on his Father and those who would benefit from what he would accomplish.

Knowing who we are, Jesus gives us this blessed assurance. We didn’t choose him, but he chose us! He chose YOU! The victory that Jesus secured for the world by his death and resurrection also gives us a wonderful purpose. We are chosen and also appointed to bear fruit. That fruit assures us that our sins are gone. Jesus paid the price. That also frees us to live in thanks to him. When we feel inadequate because of our sins, remember what Jesus did. Also follow his example. Jesus always went to his Father in prayer. Jesus has given us that privilege too. Yes, we are Chosen and Appointed!

Lord Jesus, thank you for making us your own. Help us always to see how your choosing us has given us the wonderful purpose of sharing your love with all. Amen.
