Day 11 of Lent: Courage

Rev. Joel Gaertner March 18, 2019

achieve-1822503_1920We have had held before us many examples of people who have displayed courage.  How would you define courage? Is it staring danger in the face and not flinching?  Is it dealing with a difficult circumstance and not being afraid of what is around you?  Certainly those are some definitions which could fit for courage.

Romans 8:37 gives us another perspective on courage – Christian courage “No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

If you read the verses surrounding our verse for today, you will see Paul talk about death, demons and other powers and being able to face them with courage.  This is not an inner courage or a courage drawn from human strength.  Paul helps us understand where our real courage as Christians comes from “through him who loved us.”

Paul’s words reminds us that Christian courage relies on Jesus and what he did and trusts that his death, life and resurrection gives us forgiveness of sins and hope  of heaven.  Christian courage relies on his mighty power as God knowing that if we have to stare in the face of death, demons or any other power, we don’t have to flinch because we know Jesus is beside us and will get us through.

As you see and hear of demonstrations of amazing human courage, let them drive you to never give up on the Christian courage you have because Jesus loves you and stands by you in every circumstance!
