Love is a lifestyle

Rev. Ed Fredrich February 27, 2020

Do not just pretend to love others. Hate what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another with brotherly love. Think of others as deserving more honor than yourselves. Do not be lagging behind in zeal, but be fervent in spirit, as you continue to serve the Lord. Be joyful in hope. Endure trials patiently. Persist in prayer. Share with the saints who are in need. Be quick to welcome strangers as guests.  (Romans 12: 9-13)

“Love” and hearts are the typical decorations in businesses and homes this time of year. Flowers, candy and cards are the typical things given. Valentine’s Day is the reason. The emphasis on “love” isn’t bad. Even the Apostle Paul, who was inspired to write the verses quoted, would agree. He is encouraging us to look at our motivation to show love. Ask yourself, “Are you busy just pretending to love others?”

It is not wrong to give flowers, candy or cards, but can they just be an outward show? God’s Word is really encouraging more. Love is not just a word; it’s truly a life style. Read those verses again. Every one of those encouragements takes a real effort. It is important to remember what our motivation is for following this advice.

In 1 John 4:10, we read “This is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.” Once again, the season of Lent begins in February. This is the time we remember God’s love expressed in what Jesus did as our Savior. Use it to be enabled to live as God’s Word encourages us.

We pray: Lord, thank you for revealing your love for us. By what you have done, we are made your very own. Continue to send your Spirit into our hearts that we may reflect you love by following the advice you have given us in your word. Lead us always to live in faith to you, Lord Jesus.  Amen.
