Follow the Example Jesus Sets
Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Luke 4:12)
In the book of Deuteronomy, God shares, Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6: 5-7, 9)
Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy in these passages from Luke’s gospel.
These words of Jesus came at the conclusion of his temptation by the devil after 40 days in the wilderness:
- The devil said, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’” Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3.
- The devil shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world. The devil says, “If you worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus responds, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’” Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:13.
- Then the devil takes Jesus to Jerusalem to the highest point of the temple. The devil says, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here.” Jesus responds, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16.
These temptations of food, great riches, and power might be attractive to us. We might be tempted to listen and follow the devil. We must remember Jesus’ response: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” Don’t do something just because you want to see God’s reaction. Don’t attempt to do the impossible, and then assume that God will save you.

As we now enter the season of Lent, note how God sends Jesus to live, suffer, and die in your place. He willingly takes upon himself every sin you have committed. Jesus does that out of love for you and all people.
Follow the example Jesus sets. Fight every temptation that may come your way. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4: 7)
Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for setting an example for us. We see you fight and defeat every temptation that comes your way. Help us, through your Word, to lean on you. Help us resist temptation. You have suffered and died for us. You give us peace amid turmoil. Thank you for your willingness to come to Earth as our Savior. In your name, we pray. Amen.
