General Invitation, Specific Promise
by Mark Hayes, President of Ministry

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)
A particular word that has been used for years has withstood the test of time and never seems to go out of style. That word is “whatever.”
This one-word answer is the most efficient way to dismiss a topic, turn away a questioning authority figure, or let someone know you simply do not care. Most times, it is an irritating word to hear.
In John 3:16, God uses a similar word, but it has the exact opposite meaning and an incredibly powerful effect. God uses the word “whoever.” Far from being dismissive, the word is attentive and open. The word does not leave us with the impression that God does not care.
In fact, “whoever” opens the door to the world, and the verse in which it appears shows the intensity and depth of God’s love. No matter what your background or track record is, your faith in Jesus is lifesaving.
God so loved the world. Here is another overarching expression that carries inclusiveness under its generic cover. God’s love and his plan to save includes the entire world—not just one time period, one nation, or one group of people who follow a certain set of rules.
So, “whatever” or “whoever” … “who cares?” God does. Very much—so much that he gave up his own child to make you part of his family. The open invitation of this message gives you as much certainty as if God wrote your name into that verse. “God so loved _ [your name] _ that he gave his one and only son.” God gives forever to whoever believes in Jesus.
