God and his Word never fail
Romans 9:6a “It is not as though God’s Word had failed.”
There is a very fine line between people loving God and what he does and people turning on God and blaming him for their problems or something which didn’t go the way they thought it should. That is the context and background for our verse for this week. More specifically Paul is addressing the thought that some people aren’t going to be in heaven because God’s Word failed or didn’t do its job.

Most often you see the line of thinking that somehow God failed or is at fault in the case of a tragedy or something which people think went horribly wrong such as a week ago in Las Vegas. Remind yourself of our devotion on last week’s passage which reminded us: “We may not always see or know immediately or even this side of heaven, but we can and must trust in God’s purpose.”
Sometimes the thinking that somehow God or his Word failed comes from an idea that God would never allow something bad to come into people’s lives. Such a line of thinking is flawed and even contrary to what God tells us in the Bible. Consider the words of Jesus in John 16:33: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
God makes us a sure and certain promise that his Word will always accomplish his purpose and will never fail. In Isaiah 55:10-11 , God gives us that promise with a very visual illustration: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

From the fall into sin until Jesus comes again the devil will try every trick in his arsenal to try to get us to doubt that God always has our best in mind. Our verse for this week is a short, to the point reminder that God and his Word never fail.
