Jesus calms the storms!
Mark 4:39- Then he got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
I have a reoccurring dream when life gets stressful. The dream always centers around a tornado. I am not sure why this happens, but it is almost like clockwork whenever something very stressful happens that has a negative impact on my life.
The disciples had a moment like that one night. They were on their way across the Sea of Galilee, a lake the majority knew very well since they fished it their whole lives up to this point. But while they were in the middle of the lake, a ferocious storm blew up. They tried their best to keep the boat afloat. But it became apparent that they were not going to make it, or so it seemed. Jesus was blissfully unaware of the storm since he was fast asleep. Finally, when all hope was lost, they woke him up. “Don’t you care that we are going to drown?!”
“Don’t you care?!” How often Jesus hears these words from his disciples! When ever we face earthly dangers and difficult moments that are out of our control, we tend to throw up our hands and say, “God, don’t you care?” How patient Jesus is with his disciples! They should have known better. We should know better. Yet, Jesus calmed their fear by immediately ending the storm.
You might be wondering; does he still do that today? He does not promise to immediately end the storms in our lives. But he gives us great calm during the storms by reminding us that he crushed our sins and death under his feet. We will not die but live. He will use the storms in our lives to keep us going back to the calming message of forgiveness and life we have in him. Jesus remains with us throughout the storms in our lives no matter how chaotic they may be. Nothing will separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. That we can be certain about in every storm!
Dear Ruler over the wind and the wave! Continue to pour out your caring heart to us while we go through the storms of life. Let us remember that nothing separates us from you. In your name we pray. Amen.
