Jesus is in control.

Rev. Roger Woller May 22, 2023

It is as great as the working of his mighty strength, which God worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule, authority, power, and dominion, and above every name that is given, not only in this age but also in the one to come. (Ephesians 1:20-21)

There are greeting cards for all kinds of occasions.

When was the last time you received an Ascension Day card?  I am guessing you have never received a greeting card on Ascension Day.

Forty days after Jesus rose from his grave, he physically left this earth and ascended to the heavenly places.

What should an Ascension Day card read? Maybe “Have a nice day and have many more Ascension Days.”

I don’t think so. I feel the card should read what our verse tells us. Today’s verse gives us great comfort and strength while we are in this sinful world, heading to our graves.

I am sure you have thoughts like I do. At times, this sinful world is out of control and there is no hope for Christians. We are all doomed. Sin is in control.  Lawlessness is ruling the cities, schools, government, and more. To some extent, this is true. Should we despair and give up hope?  No.

Our verse reminds us that Jesus rose from the dead.  The Easter message assures us. Jesus paid for our sins.  Even though we will die, we too will rise from the dead to enjoy everlasting life in heaven.

What is Jesus doing for us right now?  He is sitting at the right hand of God the Father, which means he is in control of everything in heaven and on earth. Our Savior has not forsaken us.  Listen to what the verses tell us, Jesus is “far above all rule, authority, power, and dominion, and above every name that is given, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”

Have a blessed Ascension Day!

Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, not only do I know that my Redeemer lives but that Jesus is in control of everything while I live on this earth.  When my life on this earth ends, I will be with him in heaven.  Amen.
