“Look, the Lamb of God!”

Rev. Ed Fredrich November 30, 2025

When John saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God!” John 1:36

For thousands of years, the people of God were looking for God to keep his promise and send the Messiah. Daniel had given a timeline of sorts listing a succession of kingdoms that would come before the Messiah. After they had returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity, God had given them some prophets. The last one said that the next prophet would be the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah. That promised forerunner is the one who gave this recommendation, “Look! The Lamb of God!”

Many of the Israelites from all over the area had not only heard about John but also went to hear him. He spoke of the One who was coming after him. One day the One came to be baptized by John. John also testified, “I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from heaven and remain on him.I myself did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’I saw this myself and have testified that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:32-34)

Yes, that recommendation remains the most important recommendation anyone can receive. Because that Lamb of God took away the sins of the world. That includes your and my sins. Looking to Jesus in faith assures us of the eternal victory that our God has supplied for us through him.

Lord Jesus, thanks for sending us that important recommendation about you. Thanks for sending the Holy Spirit who enables us to believe that recommendation. Amen.
