Memorial Day Comfort!

Rev. Ed Fredrich May 26, 2025

He is the one who heals the brokenhearted and who bandages their wounds. Psalm 147:3

Today our nation pauses to remember the men and woman who gave the supreme sacrifice to keep our nation free and safe. War is a tragic result of mankind’s sin. It can also harm those who are fighting for a worthy and upright cause. Yes, we remember those men and women for good reason.

But their loss of life has brought another toll, the family and loved ones those heroes left behind. Death brings separation.  God’s word today from Psalm 147 points us in the right direction when we deal with a broken heart. The Lord certainly understands the feeling. When mankind decided to disobey God, creation was totally changed. It also made it necessary for God’s plan to be promised and, in the fullness of time, fulfilled. When you think of the cross of Christ, look at what that meant for God. Look at the cost of God the Father as he offered his Son as the Perfect Lamb. Think of what that meant for Jesus and the terrible pain he endured. Jesus himself expressing his greatest heartbreak as he asked, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”

Since we know our Lord understands heartache, the separation of death, we also look to him for the cure he offers. Jesus’ triumphant victory gives us the cure. For the loved one who died in faith there is the victory provided. For the ones who remain here on earth for now, there is that comfort. We also have the assurance that God will continue to work all things for our good.

Where can we go for comfort? To the Lord who heals the brokenhearted and bandages our wounds.

Lord Jesus, thank you for the tremendous victory that you have won for us. Enable us to always look to you in faith. Amen.
