Saving Faith
Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16
“Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Jesus asked his disciples. There were differing answers. “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
Think of that question today. What do people today think of Jesus? I would wager that there are many people today that have no opinion of Jesus at all, because they don’t know who Jesus is. There is also a certain percentage of people who have some connection to Jesus from their youth, but don’t see any relevance to having any opinion about Jesus. There are probably some who think they know who Jesus is but really don’t.
Peter gave the consensus answer for the group. “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” It is still the only saving answer. The heavenly Father still works in the world to lead people to hold that confession. The Holy Spirit works through the Word and Sacraments to establish that saving faith in the hearts of God’s people.
What do you think about Jesus? Keep holding to that Sure Foundation. He is our only Hope. He is our blessed assurance.
Lord Jesus, continue to send your Spirit into our hearts, creating and strengthening in us the saving faith that comes from the Father. Enable us to make this bold confession before the world; for you are our sure foundation and only hope. Amen.
