Teaching us to pray: “Our Father Who Art in Heaven”

Indeed, those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. Romans 8:14 (EHV)
Jesus teaches us to pray, “Our Father Who Art in Heaven.” Why? We are God’s children and heirs of eternal life by faith in Jesus our Savior. With all boldness and confidence, we pray to God the Father.
That we are God’s children didn’t just happen by accident. We weren’t always God’s children. By nature, we were dead in trespasses and sin. We were conceived and born as enemies of God. We came into this world, going the wrong direction. Going away from God as enemies of God. If we would have remained in that spiritual death, we would have ended up separated from God eternally.
In Romans Paul assures us, Indeed, those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons (children) of God. (EHV)
You probably do not remember being baptized unless you were baptized as an adult. Jesus gave us the sacrament of Baptism for a reason. He tells us to take simple water and apply the water with the words, “I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Something so simple is so miraculous. When you were baptized, the Spirit of God led you to faith. You became a child of God. By faith you received everything Jesus earned for you, the forgiveness of sins, life everlasting.
During this Lenten season, we go with Jesus to the cross. We see him suffer and die not because of any sin He committed but because of the sins you and I have inherited and committed. He made us right in God, the Father’s eyes.
My dear child of God, remember that you need to continually be led by the Spirit of God so that you don’t lose that gift of faith. Continue to grow in the Grace of God! Always keep in mind no matter what happens to you, you are a child of God and as such, your inheritance is the glory of heaven that Jesus earned for you.
Prayer: Dear Father in heaven, continue to strengthen my childlike faith. May the Holy Spirit strengthen my faith, with the means of Grace, the Gospel in Word and Sacraments. Amen.
