The Best GPS!

Rev. Ed Fredrich May 1, 2023

For you were like sheep going astray, but you are now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. (1 Peter 2:25)

How can I find the way? Did you ever ask yourself that question or something similar?

Moving to a different state 16 years ago made me very dependent on my GPS. When we first moved to Minnesota, we had no idea where many places were, nor a clue on how to get there. Sure, I knew I could use my car, but what direction do I go? What street or road would I need to take? My newer car even has one right in a center panel on the dashboard.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are very handy but because like everything made by man it is fallible. At times the system will lead you to the wrong place, even though it may be the “same” address. It can also direct on roads that don’t exist or are closed, either for construction or a bridge out.

Today is often called “Good Shepherd Sunday” because the traditional gospel for this Sunday after Easter deals with some aspect of Jesus our Good Shepherd. I suppose my headline isn’t accurate. Jesus isn’t a GPS. But he is the Good Providing Shepherd. Besides that, Peter also tells us that he is the Overseer of our souls. He not only provides for our physical needs, but he also won that eternal victory for our bodies and souls. How can you find the way? Jesus!

Prayer: Good Shepherd Jesus, thank you for the global positioning system that you have put in place for our care. Thanks for putting up with us wandering sheep and keeping us on that true and saving path to the eternal pastures you have prepared for us. Amen.
