The Future Previewed!
There he was transfigured in front of them. His face was shining like the sun. His clothing became as white as the light. Matthew 17:2
Jesus told his disciples that he would go to Jerusalem to be beaten, arrested and crucified, but on the third day he would arise. The disciples were so sure that Jesus was the promised Messiah. But the concept of Jesus having to go through suffering and death was something they just were not able at this time to consider. Not only was Jesus their Messiah, but he was their best friend. Peter had expressed their emotion, “My you receive mercy, Lord! This will never happen to you.” (Matthew 16:22)
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James and John to the mountain top. Yes, the suffering and death was necessary, but there was also the victory. That is what Jesus was previewing to the disciples. Yes, Jesus is true man. As true man, he endured pain, hunger, hardships and all the other things that people go through on earth. But Jesus also wanted his disciples know that even though he is true man, he is also true God.
In the Church Year, we stand at the end of the Epiphany Season and Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. As we review once again what Jesus did to win the victory, it is good to stop and rejoice that we know that no matter how dark the road, the victory is assured.
Jesus had Matthew, Mark and Luke record this event. The three disciples were the only beneficiaries of the vision at that time. But Jesus would be the Victor. Many years later the Risen Savior would once again appear in all his glory to the Apostle John. He recorded that vision in Revelation. No matter what the earthly church was and is going through, Jesus assures the victory.
Lord Jesus, keep the vision of your victory always front and center in our hearts and minds. Amen.
