The Great Day of Anticipation!
For what are you waiting? Maybe it’s the turkey dinner on Thursday? You might even be looking forward to Christmas? Can’t wait to get together with friends and or family? Maybe the presents? The list will vary with all of us. But today Jesus is giving his followers the number one on a believer’s list.
Just days before his arrest and crucifixion, the disciples had commented to Jesus about the beauty of the temple and Jerusalem. He told them that the day was coming when everything would be destroyed. They then asked when this would happen. As Jesus was describing the destruction of Jerusalem, he also included the end of the world. As Jesus indicated, the end times will become more and more intense.
Mark 13 records Jesus’ words: “For in those days there will be distress of such a kind as has not happened from the beginning of the creation until now, and surely never will be again. 20 If the Lord had not shortened those days, no one would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened the days. 21 Then if someone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘Look, there he is!’ do not believe it. 22 For false Christs and false prophets will rise up and perform signs and wonders to deceive even the elect, if it were possible. 23 So be on your guard. I have told you everything in advance.”
Scary times, yes. But also a time of tremendous anticipation. Jesus is going to return. The final victory is assured.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, looking around us we see the fulfillment of your words. Help us always to look up in anticipation in this world of doom and gloom. Amen.
