We See the Face of God!
No one has ever seen God. The only-begotten Son, who is close to the Father’s side, has made him known. John 1:18
Wow, it’s over. We got through another Holiday season. We celebrated Jesus’ birth. We’ve begun a new year. So, on this first Sunday of the new year, it is fitting to apply Jesus’ birth, because as John states: “No one has ever seen God.”
Because God is invisible to our eyes, many in this world think he doesn’t exist. They reason that everything came into existence by accident. It just happened over billions of years. Some will admit that something as wonderful as the earth and universe is evidence of an intelligent design. So if this world is a design, there has to be a designer. From all the things in the world and the universe, we also see that the designer has to be someone or something spectacular. We often describe that Designer with the word “God.”
What does “God” look like? John tells us: “The only-begotten Son, who is close to the Father’s side, has made him know.” That is what makes Jesus’ birth so important. He became one of us, so that the invisible is made visible for us. The incomprehensible, eternal God has revealed himself in such a way that we now are able to see God.
I know we don’t usually see Jesus physically. But the truth that the Bible has revealed makes it possible to see God. Each of us may have a different picture in our mind of how Jesus looked physically. But the Word made flesh has come. He has established a very tangible relationship that is ours by faith. Yes, in Jesus, we see the face of God!
Lord Jesus, thanks for revealing God to us. How amazing to have you as our brother. Keep us in your care. Amen.
