Welcome the King!
Tell the daughter of Zion: Look, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Matthew 21:5
Today’s verse is a quote of Zechariah 9:9. Matthew is pointing out that the events that took place on this particular Sunday were no accident. It is part of the prophecies of what the Lord’s anointed Servant would do.
The prophecies served at least two purposes:
- It gave the Old Testament believers a way to see how God was going to save them.
- When fulfilled, it established the promises of God.
The events of the first Palm Sunday brought a similar fear in the hearts of the leaders of the establishment in Jerusalem. They were happy with the system the way it was. They were doing well physically. Since they didn’t see how Jesus would be able to defeat the Romans, they were not pleased with the shouts of the people. By Friday, they would succeed in getting the crowd to change their cry.
But God in his Word had predicted it. The King did come. He did fulfill the Word. That is how God works. He always does more than what we expect. Yes, Jesus, that humble King, is exactly the One we need. He won the victory.
The day is coming when we will physically see the King. There will be no question about his authority. He will “be sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One” (Matthew 25:64). He will deliver the judgement that the world needs. By his grace, let us welcome the King!
Lord Jesus, thank you for being the King that we need. Amen.
