Who Are You Really Working For?
This summer, my son completed his first internship as he prepares to enter the workforce. Along the way, we had several good conversations about what that transition might look like and what he can expect from working life.
One day he introduced me to a podcast hosted by a young man who shares lessons learned from interviewing countless people about their careers. One observation stood out. Semi-jokingly, he said, “Everyone hates their job. That’s why they get paid to do it.” While that statement may be an exaggeration, it reflects a common sentiment.
As we talked about it, we recognized that a person’s enjoyment of work is often influenced by more than the work itself. The people we work with, the purpose behind what we do, and the relationship we have with our boss can shape our daily experience just as much as the task at hand.
God gives us a richer perspective on work that transforms at least two of those factors. First, He reminds us who our ultimate Boss is. Second, He gives our work a greater purpose.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” —Colossians 3:23–24
No matter what kind of work you do or what kind of day you are having, there is fulfillment in knowing that you are serving and pleasing God.
God has already served us in the greatest possible way: He gave His Son to save us and secure eternity for us. Moved by His love, we serve Him willingly and wholeheartedly. And we can trust the God who served us so completely to give us the strength and endurance to serve faithfully in every circumstance.
As you begin your work today, remember who your true Boss is—and work for Him with all your heart.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for serving us through Your saving love and securing eternity for us. Help us remember that You are our true Boss and that every task has purpose when done for You. Give us strength, endurance, and willing hearts to serve You faithfully and wholeheartedly in every circumstance. Amen.
