A laid-back shepherd
Every year, the Jesus Cares Ministries (JCM) program in Watertown, SD, hosts a special Christmas program. The Watertown JCM program is a joint effort between Bethlehem Lutheran Church and St. Martin’s Lutheran Church. Although the story remains the same, the program features something new each year.
“Every year, we have a new person join us for the Christmas program,” said Darla Kannas, JCM organizer in Watertown. “This year, we had two.”
JCM participants dress in costumes, either angels or shepherds, while Pastor Keith Peterson reads the story of Christmas from Luke, Chapter two.
Michael, a longtime participant in the Christmas program, played the role of a shepherd this year.
“He enjoys the laid-back position,” explained Janet, Michael’s mother. “He is able to participate as much or as little as he wants. It’s a fun night.”
In addition to the Christmas story, the night featured caroling from a group of third grade students from St. Martin’s Lutheran School.
“Involving the program participants and having them in part of the story engages the individuals at their learning levels,” said Rev. Joel Gaertner, the national director of JCM. “This is what differentiates JCM from other opportunities. This is not possible without a team of dedicated volunteers and congregations.”
The JCM Christmas program is a part of the JCM program that focuses on sharing God’s word with individuals with developmental disabilities. Get involved or bring a loved one to a program. Find a program near you at tlha.org.
